The Victoria University of Wellington is offering the Wellington Master’s by Thesis Scholarship to students commencing full-time, research-focused Master’s degree at the University, to encourage postgraduate research at the University. The Scholar will be expected to work full time on the research that is required to complete the qualification (full time is at least 35 hours per week).

Approval must be obtained from the University before any period of leave is taken, other than reasonable annual holiday leave. This includes any period the Scholar needs to spend overseas to undertake research relating to the approved programme or research. The Scholar must also apply for permission to hold paid employment during the tenure of this scholarship. Permission will normally be granted only for employment as a teaching or research assistant in an area that is directly related to the Scholar’s field of research, and for no more than 600 hours in any 1 calendar year.

Host Institution(s):

Victoria University of Wellington

Level/Field(s) of study:

Masters by research in any subject

Number of Scholarships:

Not specified

Target group:

Students enrolling for a Master’s degree by thesis worth 90 points or more.

Scholarship value/inclusions:

The scholarship comprises a $15,000 tax free stipend, plus tuition fees for 1 year (domestic fees for the thesis component only). Fees will be paid directly to the University by the Scholarships Office. International students other than those from Australia will be liable to pay the difference between the full international student fee and the domestic fee.

The stipend will be paid to each scholarship recipient in monthly instalments. A small allowance of up to $200 will be paid towards the cost of producing the thesis. Entitlement to this allowance will lapse if it is not taken up within 2 years of the date of enrolment.

Approval for the co-tenure of a Wellington Master’s Scholarship with other awards that total more than $6,000 must be sought from the University. The co-tenure of other awards may result in a reduction in the value of the scholarship stipend.

Eligibility:

Applicants must be eligible at the time of application, or who would have become eligible at the start of Trimester 2 the following year, to enrol for a Master’s degree by thesis worth 90 points or more. In some cases this will be Part 2 of a 2-year Master’s degree. Applicants undertaking a 180 point Master’s degree are ineligible. Applicants would normally be expected to have completed a Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree Part 1 demonstrating academic achievement equivalent to a First-Class Honours degree from a New Zealand University. Scholarships will be awarded solely on the basis of academic merit.

Recipients are required to accept their offer of scholarship within 4 weeks of the offer after which the scholarship offer will lapse. All offers are conditional upon the recipient being enrolled by the latest at the start of Trimester 2 the following year in a Master’s degree by thesis. If a student has already been enrolled for a Master’s degree by thesis more than 3 months at the time when the offer of a scholarship is made, the maximum length of tenure of the scholarship will be reduced at the discretion of the University.

Application instructions:

The scholarship application deadline is 1 November 2020 for studies commencing Trimester 1, 2021, or Trimester 2, 2021. Applications will normally open 1 month prior to the closing date. Candidates must submit a 1-page proposal and an academic reference at application for the scholarship.
