Good news! AIMS Structured Master’s in Mathematical Sciences Scholarships is currently open.The January intake of the AIMS Structured Master’s in Mathematical Sciences is now open. The AIMS Master’s in Mathematical Sciences is a ten month program with two intakes each year (January and August). The curriculum runs over 3 semesters described below.

The purpose of AIMS Structured Master’s in Mathematical Sciences Scholarships program is:

  1. to give students the opportunity to work with an expert supervisor on a research project;
  2. to go through the process of independently reviewing, understanding and explaining scientific or mathematical material;
  3. to optionally do experiments — on a computer or otherwise — and report the results;
  4. to write a scientific report.

The African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) is a pan-African system of centres of excellence for post-graduate exercise, research and public engagement in mathematical sciences. They enable Africa’s best students to become reformers that thrust scientific, educational and economic self-sufficiency. Their dream is to lead the transformation of Africa through innovative scientific exercise, technical developments and inventive discoveries which profit the entire of society. Their duty is to empower Africa’s brightest scholars to flourish as independent intellectuals, problem solvers and reformers able of propelling Africa’s future scientific, educational and economic self-sufficiency.

AIMS South Africa is situated in Muizenberg, a small seaside suburb of Cape Town and a region of exceptional natural beauty. The place is a half hour drive away from the three local Universities, the centre of Cape Town and the Cape Town international airport. Ensure you see the directions to AIMS South Africa if you will be coming down here with your own vehicle.

AIMS South Africa building is a self-contained residential centre with brilliant computer, library and lecturing facilities. Lecturers and scholars reside and dine in the main building, allowing for maximum contact time in an informal and collegiate setting. The AIMS South Africa Research Centre is accommodated in 2 buildings across the road from the main building. These were acquired and renovated by AIMS South Africa in 2007. Tutors and visiting researchers are housed in two buildings situated a short walk away from the Institute.

There will be no course expenses for prosperous candidates and full bursaries covering tuition, housing, feeding and travel expenses will be granted to successful candidates

Eligibility for AIMS Structured Masters in Mathematical Sciences Scholarships is currently open.

The January admission of the AIMS Structured Master’s in Mathematical Sciences is accessible to scholars following the South African academic calendar (January to December). Predilection will be given to South African citizens.  Candidates should have, or be completing by the start date of the AIMS course, a 4-year university degree in mathematics, or any science or engineering subject with a noteworthy mathematics component. A candidate’s record should show strong aptitude in mathematics. The course overview lists the courses which form part of this program. AIMS Structured Master’s in Mathematical Sciences Scholarships Selection Criteria: Each applicant’s dossier will be evaluated in the light of the prior educational opportunities available to her or him. Prospective candidates must be able to show both a high degree of motivation, and the preparation and ability essential to complete the course effectively.

Scholars are intensely advised to apply by 31 October. Applicants who are accepted on to the program will be notified mid-November. Scholar applications gotten during November and December will be considered for places which may still be unoccupied. Late applications will be considered on a case by case basis.
