The Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree program in AquaCulture, Environment and Society (EMJMD ACES/ACES+) provides Erasmus Mundus scholarship awards to highly ranked candidates who wish to commence the 2-year degree course in 2021-2023, which academic year starts September 2021. This full-time program is intended for European and foreign students who possess a Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in 1 of the areas of aquaculture, marine biology, marine science, environmental or social sciences, biology, who wishes to advance their skills.

Semester 1: Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS), an academic associate of the University of Highlands and Islands, UK. UHI-SAMS focuses on the environmental effects of aquaculture, especially in cold water marine environments, new innovative technologies and systems to reduce this effect.
Semester 2: University of Crete in Greece – concentration on finfish aquaculture.
Semester 3: University of Nantes, France – focus on shellfish aquaculture.
Semester 4: Industry-focused research project, and candidates will be distributed amongst all the partner universities (i.e. the Universities of Crete, SAMS-UHI, Nantes or Radboud), on the basis of their choice of topic and accessibility of staff with the relevant research proficiency.

Benefits of Erasmus Mundus Scholarships for Joint Master Degree in ACES/ACES+

There are two groups of scholarship awards: Program Country scholarships and Partner Country scholarships.

Partner Country scholarships offer up to € 8,000 each year per scholarship award beneficiary from a Partner Nation. This comprises € 2,000 each year for travel expenses + € 1,000 for installation costs for scholars who are inhabitant of a Partner Country located less than 4,000 km from the EMJMD organizing institution (i.e. UHI-SAMS). For candidates situated 4,000 km or greater from the EMJMD organizing institution (i.e., UHI-SAMS), a provision of € 3,000 each year for travel expenses + € 1,000 for installation expenses will be awarded. Furthermore, a monthly stipend as contribution to subsistence of € 1,000 each month will be awarded for the entire length of the EMJMD study program (i.e. 24 months). A minimum of 75% of the scholarship awards are granted to students from Partner nations.

Programme Country scholarship awards offer up to € 4,000 each year per scholarship beneficiary from a Program Country. This comprises € 1,000 each year per scholar for travel and installation expenses. Furthermore, a monthly stipend as contribution to subsistence of € 1,000 each month will be awarded for the entire length of the EMJMD study program (i.e. 24 months).

Eligibility for Erasmus Mundus Scholarships for Joint Master Degree in ACES/ACES+

Eligible candidates for Program Country scholarships are all other candidates who do not satisfy the conditions for Partner Country scholarships (this comprises all nationals of the European Union, Norway, Iceland, Turkey, Lichtenstein, and FYROM, and also, people who have spent over 12 months in the EU over the last 5 years).

Erasmus Mundus Scholarships for Joint Master Degree in ACES/ACES+ Candidates are required to possess a Bachelor’s degree (or equal; second class or higher at Honours level) in 1 of the areas of environmental or social sciences, which could be: Marine Science, Aquaculture-related studies, Biology, Aquatic Biology, Marine Resources or Environmental Sciences, Environmental Economics and Environmental Policy. They are required to have English competence equivalent to 6.5 Academic IELTS (with at least 6.0 in all 4 components). Mature students and those with hands-on working experience in the aquaculture sector, are particularly welcomed.

To put in for a place on the next intake (2021-2023) you will have to fill out two application forms – a University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI) and ACES application form.
